Mexico City, Federal District, Mexico (AHN) – The U.S. and Mexican governments signed agreements Tuesday designed to improve airline security as Mexico continues its war against drug cartels. The two countries also agreed to seek ways to protect immigrants, who are often targeted by criminals as they cross over the international border. “In the face of ever-evolving multinational threats, the United States is committed to working with our international partners to enhance information-sharing and our mutual security,” U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement. She signed the treaty on behalf of the United States at a ceremony in Mexico City. Chinese Elementary School Stampede Raises Safety Questions

Aksu City, China (AHN) – While elementary school children were walking down the stairs toward their playground, some fell triggering a stampede. According to reports nearly 100 students were hospitalized and one is listed as being in a coma. According to a government spokesman who refused to disclose his name, the incident occurred at 12 p.m. at an elementary school in Aksu city in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Safety in China’s schools and its nearly 220 million primary and middle school students has been the topic of public scrutiny after several attacks on schoolchildren in various parts of the country over the last few months. Philippine Labor Department Lifts Ban On Night Work For Women

Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines (AHN) – The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment has unofficially lifted the ban on night work for women by issuing Advisory No. 4. The advisory said female employees may be allowed night employment if they are over 18 years old. The country’s labor code bans night work for women and it would take a law to amend the ban. Instead of going through a lengthy legislative process, the Labor Department issued the advisory to provide protection to millions of Filipino women in night jobs, particularly those employed in the business process outsourcing industry. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the labor code has exemptions on the night work prohibition that would ensure equal employment opportunities and rights against work discrimination. Group Bans Catches Of Some Sharks, Leaves Tuna Limits Little Changed

Paris, France (NewsBahn) – Delegates from 48 countries ended a week-long conservation conference here Saturday with an agreement on new protections for several species of endangered sharks, but failed to tighten limits on harvesting bluefin tuna. Members of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas voted to ban the fishing and sale of seven species of sharks whose numbers have dropped drastically due to overfishing. The ban covers oceanic whitetip sharks and six types of hammerheads: Great Scalloped Scoophead Smalleye Smooth Whitefin Populations of these sharks are estimated to have declined up to 99 percent in various oceans around the world. MTV Responds To Screenwriter’s “Jersey Shore” Rip-Off Allegation

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) – MTV has responded to the allegations of a screenwriter who claims the network ripped off his idea for a reality TV show and called it “Jersey Shore.” Christopher Gambale claims he first came up with the idea of guidos and guidettes in 2006, but MTV insists they’ve been in the business of guidos since 2004. According to Gambale, he pitched the idea of a show called “Guidos: The Reality Series” to MTV in 2006.
