Shafi’i Abokar – AHN News AHN Correspondent

Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) – Al Shabaab militants, the al Qaeda proxy in Somalia, have ordered Somali teachers and their school children to pay a monthly contribution to help finance the group’s combat operations against the United Nations-backed government and African Union peacekeepers in the capital.

During a meeting with school principals in the Elasha Biyaha neighborhood outside the capital on Friday, militants declared Somali students must pay one dollar and as well as every teacher must pay 10% of their salary at the end of every month.

“The holy war in Somalia will continue and every Somali must take part in the war that means if you cannot come to the battle zone you have to contribute money to the holly war,” senior al Shabaab leader Sheik Fu’ad Mohamed Qalaf told school principals.

A Somali school teacher who demanded anonymity because of security reasons told All Headlines News that the latest order from al Shabaab cannot be met because of the amount of money they are demanding.

“We live in a very poor situation because the monthly salary we take doesn’t even cover the whole needs of our families and most of the students we have don’t pay school fees because they include orphans and some from poorer families so how they can be able to pay one dollar per month,” the anonymous teacher told AHN on Saturday.

For the past several months al Shabaab have been suffering from economical problems and that is because most of the big companies whom they used to take money by force moved from the militant hotbed Bakaara market to the government controlled- side of the capital.

Last month, al Shabaab ordered business owners in the Elasha Biyaha neighborhood to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash as contribution to their ongoing conflict against the central government. Elasha Biyaha is home to more than 1.5 million people who fled from their homes in the capital Mogadishu.

Lalit K. Jha – AHN News Correspondent

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told lawmakers on Wednesday that growing inflationary pressure in China is helping American companies increase their competitiveness.

Testifying before the Senate Committee on Finance, Geithner said the Chinese currency is moving very gradually in nominal terms against the dollar. “But because their inflation rates are so much higher than ours, it’s actually appreciating in real terms against the United States at a rate, if continued, roughly 10 percent a year or a little more,” Geithner said.

“If that were sustained, that would bring about a major shift in the competitive balance in our favor over time, which is necessary and important, not just to us, but for all of China’s trading partners,” Geithner added.

Geithner said the Chinese have reached the judgment themselves internally that they have no choice but to let that process happen over time. “Because, again, if they were not to, they’d be left with the risk of much more inflation, much more risk of the type of financial crisis we went through. And they want to make sure they avoid that outcome,” he noted.

“Right now, what you’re seeing is very important, which is companies they make decisions with a long fuse. They have to look forward in the future. It’s like a quarterback he has to pass to where the receiver is going. They look at the competitive landscape today; they see inflation in China rising, the currency rising, wage rates rising. And they are going to change their decisions about where they build the next plant, where they buy from in the future,” he said.

That will help reinforce this recovery in the United States, Geithner said.

Later testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee, Geithner said President’s budget presents a comprehensive strategy to strengthen economic growth and expand exports with investments in education, innovation and the nation’s infrastructure.

Geithner said the deficits are too high and unsustainable. “Left unaddressed these deficits will hurt economic growth and make us weaker as a nation. We have to restore fiscal responsibility and go back to living within our means. The president’s budget cuts the deficit he inherited in half as a share of the economy by the end of his first term. These cuts are phased in over time so that we protect the recovery,” he said.

Observing that this is a very competitive world, he said the US is now focused every day on how to make the country stronger and more competitive. “If we’re going to be able to meet a substantial share of the growing demand for goods and services around the world, we want more of that to be met by investment in the United States,” he said.

“What the president’s budget does is propose a range of reforms and incentives to make it more likely that that next great American business builds their next factory in the United States and that great foreign competitor of the United States builds his or her next factory in the United States. And we want to make sure the tax code is working to encourage those kind of investments and not to discourage those kind of investments,” he said in response to a question from Rep Carl Levin.

Geithner said the United States propose to put in place a permanent and expanded tax credit for research and development in the US; to eliminate capital gains on investment in small businesses; to encourage advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies; to keep taxes on investment income, dividends and capital gains low; to reform and extend the Build America Bond Program; and to make college more affordable for middle class Americans.

The United States, he said needs a more competitive system that allows the market, not tax planners and lobbyists to allocate investment, a system in which businesses across industries pay a roughly similar share of earnings; a system that provides more stability and certainty; that is more simple to comply with. “We need to do all this without adding to our future deficits. We’ve begun the process of building support for comprehensive corporate tax reform,” said the Treasury Secretary.

Stockholm, Sweden (AHN) – Electrolux has agreed to buy a majority stake in Olympic Group, the largest home appliance manufacturer in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Swedish manufacturer said Monday it would acquire 52 percent of the company from Paradise Capital for about 45.30 Egyptian pounds ($7.95) a share. The price may change as the transaction with Paradise Capital and due diligence is completed, but the agreement also requires Electrolux to launch a mandatory tender offer for up to 100 percent of Olympic Group for the same price.

The agreement does not include Olympic Group’s non-core businesses, Namaa and B-Tech, which Paradise Capital will acquire upon completion of the transaction. The enterprise value for Olympic Group excluding the two companies, which are both listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange, will be 2.7 billion pounds ($474 million).

Paradise Capital said in a statement that Electrolux’s acquisition “highlights the significant value that we have created over the years for Olympic Group’s shareholders.”

“The successful closing of this transaction will generate the necessary funds for PC’s ambitious expansion plans in its widely diversified business segments; agriculture, education, information technology, real estate development,” the company added.

Third Party Loans Pave the Way The new TV show “Shark Tank” will teach one a lot about bridge loans or hard money as it is called. Hard money is a loan obtained from a third party who is not necessarily a lender like a bank or a mortgage broker. In small towns there are always a handful of locals who have enough capital sitting around to help a cousin or friend of a friend buy their first home. Often a home that is not lendable like a single-wide or one that needs considerable fixing up. On a larger scale a bridge loan would be a more formal financial arrangement for a commercial venture. For example, a plumbing contractor wants to fix up bank owned properties he has purchased for pennies on the dollar. The lending party will provide that cash to get the job started knowing the contractor will be able to pay it back once the remodeling is complete and the home has been rented or resold. Either way hard money is a great way to generate operating capital to get a business service started or bail out an existing construction job. In these tough economic times, commercial real estate developers are often the first to falter financially.

Take a large condominium project that started during the boom as an example. The first tower was completed and sold out quickly, so the second tower was started. When the bottom began to fall out, it is likely several of the first tower investors started to fall back on their note payments. Then construction costs soared and the 2nd tower project stalled. This is the perfect time for that developer to turn to a real estate capital lender like Madison Realty Capital. The developer is not going to qualify for a bail out from a bank or your typical mortgage broker so a bridge loan provider is the only option. There are not downsides since there are no other options at this juncture. The interest rate may be high and the loan term may be short, but if the developer offers an equity stake in his condominium venture, that bridge loan can turn into a win-win. At some point the market will turn around, the bridge loan or hard money will have helped you through the hard times or the start-up. Now the future will be newly paved without any further financial headaches. Ideally, the money borrowed will be paid back and any further interim financing required will be less of a mystery. Indeed future hard money loans would be available at better interest rates with a proven track record of successfully completed projects.

You have a great idea for a start-up business and you are, probably, short on capital, so raising money is your first concern. You are going to need outside investor groups, therefore you need to know the difference between angel investors and venture capital firms. Less is known about angel investing as compared to venture capital, due to the privacy of their investments. However, these are the key points to consider in order to make the right choice.

1. Ease of obtaining financing
It commonly takes less time to receive funds from an angel investor, as obtaining venture capital funds is a highly rigorous process. Therefore, your business should meet all the investment criteria before being considered by a venture capital firm. The difficulty with angel investors may arise in case your business requires funding from several investors, as they could demand different terms.

2. Investment Size
The range of venture capital funding is larger than the one of angel investors. Angels act alone or in organized groups and invest their own money. Venture capital firms are corporate entities that pool money from a range of investors. Angels typically provide under $1 million, venture capitalists mostly above $1 million.

3. Stage focus
The focus of angel investors is typically the earlier or the seed stage of your start-up company. Venture capital firms focus on different stages of your business. Vc providers are much less likely to invest at the seed stage and they may provide second round financing after angels. Moreover, their purpose is to take your venture to the initial public offering stage and beyond.

4. Industry focus
Angel investors vary in investment areas and may allocate funds to a range of fields, frequently within their areas of expertise. Venture capital firms generally concentrate on emerging sectors such as technology or innovation.

5. Geographic Focus
Both business investors often prefer to invest within the vicinity of their offices. The purpose is to add management value to your company and to easily monitor all their portfolio companies.

6. Expected returns
Both angels and venture capitalists generally expect a high rate of return for their investments. Stereotypically, a venture capitalist may have higher return expectations than an angel investor.

7. Expected Control
Angel investors and vc firms are similar in that they expect a board position and possibly a consulting role. Both invest in return for an ownership stake in your company and for a certain degree of involvement, but venture capital firms will exercise even more control over your company.

8. Support and Expertise
Angel investors will more than likely provide support and advice to the start-up business. Vc firms generally possess greater expertise, as they prefer to lead ventures through successive funding stages.

9. Risk taking
A venture capitalist prefers to invest in a business that will offer security and a high return on investment. An angel is far more likely to be a risk taker and put money into a venture at the riskier seed stage.

10. Motivation
Angel investors are also motivated by the desire to see innovative ideas get off the ground and become successful businesses, whereas venture capitalists are more motivated by profit.

As you need to maximize your chances of obtaining the suitable level of financing for your start-up business and minimize the amount of time spent for that purpose, a Venture Capital Firms, Angel Investors & Private Equity Funds Directory will make a difference.

As corporate advisors, we meet with many companies who seek investment capital to help with the growth of their business. But attracting investor capital depends greatly on whether they are ‘investor ready’ or not.

Recently, a company in the building industry approached us to raise A$5m capital for them. They were well established and profitable and had the opportunity to expand overseas and required the funding to finance their expansion.

After a short period of due diligence, it was apparent to us that they were far from being ‘investor ready’. We prepared the following check list for them and are now working with them to implement it before we approach any investors.

The check list covers the major issues that an experienced investor will look for (and expect) in an investee company:-

•	Experienced and stable management team not only knowledgeable as regards to the industry and product, but capable of successfully implementing the business plan and managing the company’s operations. Investors invest in management who are committed long term to the business

•	Sound understanding of the industry the business is in,

•	Realistic investor ready business plan (featuring a detailed and realistic business strategy of current and future plans).

•	Realistic achievable financial forecasts and potential for high returns on investment (ROI).

•	Excellent business growth potential with rapidly growing markets.

•	A willingness to include, if required, the Investor in the management of the business

•	A comprehensive understanding of the customer (target market), including market size, demographics, trends , pricing strategies, accessibility, growth potential, demand for products and services ,and commitment to business development.

•	A clear idea of the valuation of the business, the equity available for the investor and a strategy for the exit of the investor.

•	Efficient internal accounting and financial systems and signed off Accountants reports are a must.

•	An easy to follow and manageable growth product/business strategy, combined with planned financial manageability over the period.

•	Ability to explain how the investment capital will be used.

•	Point of difference – in product, distribution, profit, returns, management, location, contacts, technology, barriers to entry, patents or other unique competitive advantages.

•	An understanding that attracting the right investor can take time – usually up to six months.

Approaching investors unprepared is probably the single most common reason why entrepreneurs fail to attract capital. Some investors see 10 or 20 deals a week. If your proposal does not include all of the above, chances are you won’t get past first base and they are immediately onto the next deal.

However once you learn how to make your business ‘investor ready’ and you succeed in attracting an investor the first time, going for subsequent rounds of funding, or funding a new venture becomes much easier. Hence if you want to become a successful entrepreneur, it’s worth spending the time and effort to learn how to make your company ‘investor ready’.

What are your expectations when you sell your business idea to a venture capital firm for a business loan? What about when you look for a venture capital firm for investment purposes? While both aspects may seem pretty self-explanatory, there’s more to both than they appear to be.

A venture capital firm is actually a company made up of a number of businessmen and investors looking for upcoming and small entrepreneurs to invest their money on. Often referred to as private equity investors, this group of people are always on the lookout for brilliant business ideas and pitch-ins, which will give them a substantial amount of return in their investments at the soonest possible time.

When you approach a venture capital firm for whatever purpose you might have, you need to always prepare yourself before you meet them up. If you’re someone who would like to offer an investment, then you need to consider how much money you’re willing to invest and how soon would you like to get the profit out of it. Of course there will be risk involved as in a typical investment portfolio and to gauge this risk with a certain venture capital firm, you need to setup a meeting with their investors.

One of the truths in the business market is how the risk is directly proportional to one’s investment and return of investment as well. The larger the money you are willing to invest, the bigger the risk will be. The bigger the risk is, the larger the probable return on investment you can receive. The financial asset of these venture capital firms goes into the early stage capital of several small businesses and hence, your expected return will be largely dependent on how successful is the operation of that small business venture.

As one of the small business investors, you need to convince these business owners that you are interested in their business portfolio and you’re willing to give a huge amount of money as a startup investment in their business venture firm. Members of a venture capital firm have well-guarded trade secrets and if they find you trustworthy enough, they may very well treat you as one in the league.

As an entrepreneur, on the other hand, you need to sell them your business idea convincingly enough so as to invest money for your early stage capital. Oftentimes, a great business idea will be picked by reliable venture capital firms and they’d even fund a hundred percent of your startup funds right there and then. Of course they will be partaking some of your profits but given the financial circumstance, that’s the most sensible thing to do.
