The pirates were led by Captain Redbeard aka Captain Roger in some markets. The pirates were a common theme through the history of Lego Pirates. Battling the Imperial Soldiers, Imperial Guard, Islanders and also the Imperial Armada.
The pirate’s flag was the Jolly Roger. The pirate flagship was called the Black Sea’s Barracuda and was released in 1989. It was the largest vessel of the pirate fleet until the release of the Skull’s Eye Schooner in 1993. Some still see the Black Sea’s Barracuda as the ultimate pirate ship, I still do.
For home bases the pirates started with Forbidden Island as their base which was followed by Rock Island Refuge with its release in 1991.
Interestingly, pirates was the first Lego figures with different faces, introducing beards, moustaches and eye patches. They were also the first Lego theme to introduce characters to the mix, giving more of a story feel to the set.
